ATHLETIC SPORTS.

OLYMPIC COUNCIL.

REPORT FOR SECOND YEAR.

"Since the last annual report (says the second annual report of the Olympic Council for New Zealand) the council inquired into ,the causes for the deJay that occurred in forwarding 51. E. Champion's expenses to England. It was ascertained that tlio lion, secretary for Australasian Olympic Councils that, by the time he received Champion's money from New Zealand he was unable to get in touch with the manager of the Australasian team. He therelore held tiie money and subsequently returned it to the New Zealand Council. The council immediately cabled to Mr. Win. Henry the amount advanced by him on Champion's behalf. Another matter which the council inquired into was a claim made on the council by one of its representatives for additional out-of-pocket expenses amounting to £30. After inquiries the counci] dccided that the athlete in question had no claim. - "The statement submitted by Mr. Hornimaii, tiie manager of thc'Australasian 'team,\ shows that the total amount' expended by'.thc council>in sending its representatives to the. Olympic Games-was as follows:—On account.of Hill, £160 19s; Old:;. on accqutit of Champion,- £141 10s. In addition" .to: this the jnow Zealand Amateur Swimming Association paid £IG'l2s. Gd. expenses incurred 'by Champion in competing in events other than at the Sanies. "A matter of great importance to Now Zealand was whether New Zealand should secede from Australia and apply for separate representation on the International Olympic Committee., It was eventually decided to remain as at' present. A proposal has been made to alter the name from "Australasian" to "Australia and; New Zealand.", If this were agreed to it would remove the objection raised that New Zealand's identity is merged in the present title. The question of a British Empire team was also considered by the council during the past year but, as the idea was not favourably received by the English controlling body, the matter was not proceeded with. "The New Zealand Sports Protection League has- kindly offered to co-operate with the council in its endeavours to have New Zealand adequately represented at future Olympic Games. It will be the duty of the incoming council to take tliia matter in hand immediately. "Another matter which tlio incoming council will be called upon to deal with is the question of co-operating with Australia, in its endeavours.to raise the sum of £10,000 to train and send reoresentatives to the next Olympic Games to be held in Berlin in 1916. Already the matter has been taken up very enthusiastically in the. various States of the Commonwealth, and in Now South Wales a public meeting has been held and various sub-committees set up to arrange details for raising the sum mentioned. It now remains for New Zealand to do her share towards assisting the Australian States in their endeavours. "As was the case last year, the membership of the council is still confined tq the four associations, viz., New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, No.w Zealand Lawn Tennis Association-; New Zealand; Amateur ; Swimming Association, and New Zealand Amateur Mowing Association. As soon as the programme iorthe next Olympic Games is settled; which will probably be at a conference to be held at Paris in 1914, the council hopes tq have th 6 ;. c'o-hnc ration Of 'other associations. During tlio vear the council affiliated with the Wellington Federated Amateur Sports Bodies." The financial statement shows receipts ■to the amount of, £72 7s. Id. (including £45 os. Id. brought forward and £30 Is. referred from Sydney in connection with Champion's expenses). Of the total, £52 4s. is aocounted for by a l&piittance to Mr. Henry (on account of Champion's expenses), and. petty expenses. The balance at bank, is £5 12s.

CENTRE'S ANNUAL 3IEETING. The. annual meeting of the Wellington Swimming "Coniro was hold last evening, Mr. T. Ronayne presiding. The annual report and balance-sheet (previously published) was read and adopted. Mi'. D. K. Blair moved: "That Rule 31 be amended to read that each afliliated club shall subscribe to the ceniro the sum of Is. per senior member per annum in lieu of the ordinary subscription of £1 Is. per club to the centre, and that the subscription to the coira* cil remain unaltered." The motion was discussed at snnio length, and several members emphasised the necessity for an increase in the subscriptions, in order to keep the centre in a sound financial position. Eventually Mr. Levy moved an amendment, to the effect that a levy of an extra £1 Is. per cent, be made instead of the Is. per senior member. The amendment was lost by ten votes to six. The original motion was lost by about 13 votc3 to five. A further motion was moved by Mr. Blair to the effect that the centre shall receive 14 days' notice of the nominations for the executive of that body. This was lost on a show* of hands. The Wellington Chib sent forward the following motion: —"That no mcmW 0 fany club can be a member of more than one club." After the pros and cons of the motion had been discussed, and an amendment to the effect that private tlubs and those who do not take part in intcr-club championship!), be accepted) had been lost, the motion was put to'the meeting. It was lost an a show of hands. ' 1 A further motion by the Wellington Club was as follows:—"That one club have on'o delegate only on the centre." This was j.lso lost. A motion appreciating the services of the late secretary of the centre (Mr. Blick) was carried unanimously. Messrs. Shield, Blair, and Atkins were deputed to co-operate with the Boys' Institute in making representatives to the City Council with a view to prevailing up on that body to increase the maximum of 10,000 gallons of water per week, this to be granted free of charge for the institute's proposed tepid baths." • Mr. T. Shields mentioned: that h& took exception to a statement which had been published in the report of the Swifts' Club's meeting, to the effect that some boys and girls bad received swimming certificates for greater distances than they had actually swum. Ho stated that he was chiefly concerned in the granting of these certificates, and, last year, he had put through about 130 boys and girls, who had swum distances for which lie could vouch. He felt this keenly. Mr. F. Wilton stated that one speaker had brought the matter up at'the Swifts . meeting, but it was not dealt with as a club matter. What really happened was that a member had mentioned at the meeting that some school-children's swimming capabilities had been overrated in the certificates, and he had suggested that the matter should be inquired into. The discussion then lapsed.. Tiie election of officers for the season ■resulted as follows: —President, Mr. T. Rouayne; vice-prcsidfcnts, Messrs. A. Maxwell and A. Levy;' chairman, Mr. J. F.
