HOTELS TO CLOSE AGAIN.
Police inspect bars. ! THE WATCH FOR ILLICIT SALES. AHday yesterday tho city hotels were closed, in accordance with the order issued by tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Lnko), and it has been decided that they must remain closed again to-day. .Any fur-, thor notion,:the Mayor states, will bo as' circumstances and -.conditions warrant. -.' _ ■ A certain amount of drunkenness was hoticeablo in the streets yesterday, .and it was a'matter of common mention that some few of the hotels wore selling behind closed doors. TheNpolice made a round of tho licensed houses during the day, and it is understood that a result of this will be that at least one licensee will bo prosecuted for a breach of tho order requiring him to close. .■':•• During the course of tho strikers' • open-air meeting at Oriental Bay last night'one of the speakers complained that, while the hotels had been closed to citizens, liquor, had been sent from one of the. brewery establishments to the boats at the wharves for consumption (ho alleged) by workers. From inquiry made, it appears that any citizen is still free to purchase liquor at a brewory or licensed wholesale establishment, provided that the requirements of the law aro complied with. It is, moreover, stated that more than . one brewery did considerable business yesterday. ..
