CITY COUNCIL'S COAL.
GAS COMPANY'S AID. A. thousand tons of coal, have been secured by the'Ciby Council' in addition to.tlie stock already iu hand. Tlio Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) stated yesterday that citizens could now bo assured that tlio total quantity, including the new accession, would be r/iple for the continuauco _of the city's lighting and transit serviccsr—Thc-council has been placed in its fortunate,position through the Wellington Gas Company foregoing its claim on a cargo. "I want to place on record," said: Mr. Luke-yesterday, "the appreciation of the council, and myself of tho great -.assistance rendered in this matter by the City Engineer (Mr. W. H.. Morton), and I want also •to thank ,Mr. W.'Ferguson, general manager of the 'Gas Company, who, in spite of the fact that his company is concerned in competition with tlio municipal electric light service, voluntarily offered to forgo his claim on a cargo pf coal iu tlio interests of the city as a -whole. Such actions as, these in a time of a crisis do much to create a bond of fellowship which I should like to see extended in other directions for the lasting good of. the; city."
