PALMERSTON, There was a large attendance at the prize-giving to scholars of .St. Paul's .Sunday School at the Empire Hall on Wednesday evening. 'Jho proceedings comprised a tea arid concert, iit which a cantata was rendered which reflected credit on tho children's trainer, Mr. 0. Wniit-ingtou. 'Jhe secretary's report,, stated that the year hud begun with a roll number of 21)6 and had finished with an average of 220. The average attendance, however, had increased, being 14.9. Tho teaching staff had increased from 17 to 27. . . The Technical School sports on Wednesday were held in sunny weather and nrjdui'eti school records in live events, namely the 100 yds, Cup Championship (won by E. Robbie in i.oa-ssoe.), One Mile Cycle Kate (11. Hickfoid, 2min. ■Msec'.); Two Mile Cycle Race (J. A. Halpin, smin. 20scc.}, the 220 yds. Handicap (K Bobbie, 25 4-ssec,), and 880 yds Handicap (M. Luxford, scr., 2min. I9sec). ■ At the butchers' picnic at Ashhurst on Wednesday Messrs. Collinsoii and Sons' Cup was won by C. Bailey who won two out of three races counting in the contest. , A man, aged about •70 years, was found dead Til. bed at the farm of Mr. Lovelock, at Karere, where he had been working. A further meeting of the Hospital Day Committee has matured its plans for a combined collection. The following are entrusted with the supervision: Country districts—Pohangina Valloy, Mr, D. The Salvation Army Band will give an evening performance on the Showgrounds in aid of the fund. Tho borough streets will be exhaustively canvassed, by occupants of decorated motor-cars and immunity badges will not be purchasable for less than half a crown. Tlio Mayor, with Mr. C. N. Clausen and Councillor Nathan will visit Feilding and Foxton to organise similar doings. Lady collectors are being enrolled. Local dairy farmers have received the pleasing news that, notwithstanding tlio strike, the union will pay out cheques for butter-fat in full. This decision was agreed to at a meeting of directors on Tuesday. The total October payment is £7513 os. 2d. Dr. and Mrs. Putnam have arrived back from their Australian trip. Mr. W. The. coal supply at Mastcrton gasworks is only sufficient to last another three weeks. The Mayor visited. Wellington this week, and is hopeful that the supply'may shortly be supplemented. ' OTAKt. Among the prize-winners at tlio Wellington Show wore Messrs. Pen ft and Sawyer, of Otaki, both of whom exhibited some line roses. . FEATHERSTON. The annual Spring Flower Show of the Feafcherston Horticultural and Industrial Society was held in the Town Hall on Thursday. The exhibits in. all classes were well up to the average, tlie roses and sweet peai being somewhat less is volume than listial, but the quality of both flowers and vegetables was excellent. There were sixteen decorated tables. Sir Walter Buchanan, M.P., performed the opening ceremony, and the Hon. C. A. O. Hardy also made a short speech.
