ROSES & CARNATIONS.
i" — •—" — d ANNUAL SHOW. Tho annual show of the Wellington s Rose and Carnation Club was opened yesterday afternoon at • the Town Hall y by his Excellency tho Jiarl of Liverpool, who was accompanied by the Countess of Liverpool. His Excollency's opening speech was short and to the point. "J have, much pleasure," he said, "in der daring this show open." 1. Tho show is in many respects a fine 1- one. The exhibits are well up to the ii standard of previous years,.and in view ', of recent unfavourable weather this is - very creditable to those exhibiting. " Amongst exhibits of roses, the champion 6 bloom, "Caroline Testout," of Mr. S. j G. Pearce, is a beautiful specimen. The . new departure of tho society in inviting large exhibitors and large growers to ■ stage their flowers in any way the ex- - liibitor chooses has resulted in four very fine displays. Mr. C. Trevethick was awarded first prize in this section, for a. very artistic display, arranged in three tiers. Tho pansy exhibits are also interj esting, and the entries in this class are . larger than in any previous show held .' by tho society. The carnations, though small in number, are particularly good ill quality, while the exhibits of flower and foliage plants by Mr. C. H. Izard and Miss Rose Joseph readily catch the • eye. The following other growers have made displays that form prominent fea- [ tures: Messrs. T. Waugli, Coopers, Ltd., Hortons, Ltd., Weightman and Sons, and Bellcvue Gardens. , Prior to the opening of the show the 1 president of tho society, Mr. J. B. Harcourt, made a short' speech, in which •' he commented on the new feature of t the show, in which Mr. Trcvet : hiclc had made such a fiile display. The ladies' 1 decorated tables, though not so numerI ous as in former shows', drew very com- . plimentary reference from the judge, [ Miss Murray.
