WOMEN IN THE RIOT AREAS.
"CRIMINAL FOLLY." / ■ (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, November 18. At the Police Court, Sidney Bickerton was charged with having used insulting words and beha7iour on the occasion of the procession of strikers' wives and children, bearing a banner inscribed "To 6ee the cookies. Accused admitted tho offence, but asserted that ■ Sergeant . Fraser tore the banner from tho children's hands, and threatened to' run the children . down with horses. This allegation was denied by the sergeant; who said he spoke to several women children warning them of the danger a riot would put the children in. He probably did suggest that there was danger of tho children being ridden down by the horses. Mr. Fraser, S.M., spoke strongly of the folly of bringing children into a' crowd in the excited state that existed last Monday. It was an actof almost criminal folly. It was only fair to state that the Strike Committee had denied that it had authorised the procession." Accused' was fined £2.
