'•■■■■ ■■■»— BUT A CONTINUED INCREASE OF TEE INSANE. A decrease in tho total number of paupers, but an increase in tljp insane section, .is reported in tho half-yearly return issued recently; On January I there Wore 661,501 paupers in England and Wales, a decrease of 0614 on the figures for January, 1912- The insane numbered. 123,844, an increase of 28.101 Thoro were 8882 casuals, a decline of 850.
The number in receipt of relief on January 1 was tho lowest since 1893, while in proportion to population tho number waa tho smallest in tho table. Tins is duo to old age pensions. ■Commenting on tho pauper lunatics dnd idiots, the report states :— (i Th© total mimber of persons classed as insane receiving Poor Law relief has without intermission increased year by year since tho numbers of this class wer© recorded. Between 1872 and 1013 tho number has risen from 40,D56 to 123/844, an increase of 148 per cent."
