Petone sewage Scheme Hampered. The of cement and timber supplies is seriously hampering the work of carrying out the sewage scheme at Petone. _ The sewage engineer stated, in his report presented to the council at its ■ meeting last night, that there was sufficiont material in -hand to complete the laying of the cast-iron delivery mains. This work, however, would bo_ finished within a fortnight. _By that time, if' the present striko was not settled it .would mean tlio closing down of the works unt : l such time as cement could be obtained. General Labourers' Ballot. The general labourers' ballot on the proposal to striko will close at 7 o'clock to-morrow evening and the papors will probably be counted immediately after. Flax Workers' Attitude. , Th , e /J/ 1 ™' 11 porkers around Palmerstoil held a special meeting en Saturday (says our local correspondent), when it was resolved to make public a statement as to the fiax worW attitude towards the strike. The following statement was therefore supplied to tho Press:—Tho I? I* 1 * 0 }"! Employees' Union is entirely in accord with, and extends its sympathy and support to the workers now on striko, -and. while the feeling among the men at the various mills is strongly in favour of striking in sympathy, they are m accord with the expressed desire of tho United Federation of Labour executive to remain at. work, because in doing so, it is believed that they are in the best position to assist tho strikers However, should tho call come, the meii aro everywhere prepared to down tools. Sawmill Hands Paid Off.

Ono of tho results of tho industrial troubles is evidenced by tho necessity for discharging 200 sawmill hands in the district covored by tho operations of the Eangitikei Sawmillers' Association, duo to the falling olf in tho demand for timber (says our Taibapo correspondent). Peaceful Picketing. The Auckland Striko Committee, has obtained a legal opinion on what constitutes logitimato picketing. Tho position was thus stated for them: "It is cloar-that unions havo a. right to use pickets during the course of any trado disputo, but such pickets must act lawfully, and in so doing they will bo acting peaceably. It seoms that all pickets may do, is merely to obtain or communicate information in respect of the striko to thoso workers who aro or may he presumed to bo affected by tho striko. Thcro must be no porsuading or otherwise. preventing persons, who so desire, from working. If this is done, tlio action of tho pickets becomes an act nf '.watching or besotting,' and makes the act of picketing unlawful. Tlio picket's solo right is only to obtain or give information relating to tbof strike, and :;n lung as this only is done the uicketi»g is lawful aud ijcacefui."
