THE DRIVERS.

POSITION OF RIVAL. UNIONS,

Members of tho Drivers' Union (the original body) met at St. Peter's Schoolroom on Saturday morning. Tho sec* retary (Mr. A. Parlano) states that the meeting was mainly for tho purpose of getting the men together. Discussing tho position of affairs with a reporter on Saturday,_ air. rarlano ntentinoed that, notwithstanding the formation of the new •union, tliero were actually more drivers "out" «n Saturday than on Friday. Be complains that his union had no chance to placo its side of the case before the Riegistrar in connection witii the registration of the union, and contends that in ordinary times_ no. union would be able to effect registration. at such short notice. He states that on Wednesday lie heard the rumour that tlie now union was to bo formed, and went straight to tho Registrar to ask that he should be in- . formed if application were made to register, and that, full inquiries should ■ bo made before registration was granted. On Friday morning the union's solicitor (Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon) was instructed to lodge a'protest against tho new body's application for registration. _ Notwithstanding this, ho says, no inquiries were made from the union,' and _ oil Saturday morning advice was received that tho now body had botfji granted registration. . It appeared to him that there had been undue haste in forming a new union and in graatmg Mr, Parlano Went on to state tho majority of the members of the new union—when i£ wqs formed —were financial members of the original union, and they had not then (nor Have .they since)'withdrawn. Ho therefore, continues that they aro not put to any inconvenience in belonging to the original union, and that it is, in fact, the most convenient course for them._ In his opinion coercion -. was used m the formation of the new union It is understood that action , wili probably be taken in the Court of Arbitration to liave this registration of the new union annulled.
