STRIKE CHARGES IN COURT.
CASE OF CHARLES FINCH,
SOLICITOR ASKS RE-HEARING,
At the Magistrate's Court on Saturday, Mr. J..F. W. Dickson asked leavo to reopen the case of Charles Finch, who on Friday was sentenced to one month's imprisonment for assaulting SpecialConstablo Robert Terenco ■ Wellwood. The man had also been fined £5 on a charge of Jiis having called two specials by the usual strike epithet. Mr., Dickson, said that lie had only been instructed to appear for Finch just as the caso camo 011, but when he reached the Court ho found that-Finch had been seutonccd. He now asked his Worship to perus'9 the affidavit of an independent witness.
Mr. W. G.. ltiddell, S.M., replied that a rehearing must bo sought through tho proper channel. If sought thijt: way it could be dealt with on Monday. Mr. Dickson asserted that Finch was innocent of the' charge, and suggested / til at ho * sliould be bailed in the meantime. This suggestion, however, was not entertained. . Waterloo Quay Riot. A charge of having takon part in the riot at the Post and Telegraph Stores, Waterloo Quay, on October 30, was mado against John Edward Harrington, a seaman, 28 years of age. Mr. J. F. Dickson appeared for the defendant, who was remanded for a week. • Donald Clark, a seafaring man, was charged with having designated some special constables "scabs." He admitted the offence, and was fined £4, in default 21 days' imprisonment. Henry Grell pleaded guilty to a charge of having stolen a bag of coal valued at; 6d., belonging to the Wellington City Corporation. Inspector Hendrey said that Grell had been prominent among those who were disorderly on the waterfront. Defendant was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment.
