A new series oi' "graft" scandals, in which police officials aro involved, is being investigated by the District Attorney, Mr. Whitman. A gang of swindlers in concert with the police operated by wire-tapping methods, pretending that they used wireless telegraphy, and from their clients secured important news which they used for blackmail and other purposes* Ono woman has confessed to losing £80,000; other confessions are expected, In each instance the police are stiid to have secured ten per cent, of the proceeds of tho swindle.
