LOWER CABLE RATES.
, EXPERT'S VIEWS. . A POOLING ARRANGEMENT URGED. ■ By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. November 16, 5.5 p.m.) London, November 15. Sir James Pender, director in several of the big cable companies, _in giving evidence before the Dominions Commission, referred to tho suggestion that the minimum charge for a week-end cable letter from Australia should be 9s. instead of 18s., and said that the cables might be blocked, and thus traffic, which was only paying a small proportion of the total cost, might interfere with ordinary commercial traffic. A pooling arrangement between the Eastern Extension Co. and the Pacific Cable Board would before this have rendered a reduction of rates possible by enabling them to transfer traffic from one line to the other to save a sudden rush on ono company. If the Post Office assented the Eastern Extension Co. would always deliver~week-end cable-letters on Monday mornings,' instead of on Tuesdays. ,
The Commission has adjourned until January.
