Hurlo, who for health reasons has resigned from the Labour Department's staff in Wellington, has decided to settle in Chile. He will leave for South America next week. , - The funeral of the late Mr. David Crewe,' Mayor'of Pahiatua, on Thursday, was very largely attended. The cortege, which was headed by the Pahiatua Town Band, playing the Dead March, included members of various societies and local bodies. A service was first held at the Anglican Church; the Foresters' burial ritual was also read at deceased's late residence and at the graveside.. -Messages' of condolencewere received from all parts of the Dominion, some being from the Hon. Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph and Lady Ward. —Press Association. , Mr. and Mrs. Clifton H. Dickerson, formerly of Karori, returned from a trip to England and the Continent on Wednesday last. Registrar of Old Age Pensions at Wellington, who is recovering from an attack of pneumonia, will leave for the Eouth in a few days to recuperate. His duties aro being carried out by Mr. J. A. Thomson, formerly of the Government Insurance Department. ' . . ■ Mr. J. L. Scott, a member of the firm of Messrs. Scott Bros., engineers, and ironfounders-, died in Christchurch on Thursday. Messrs. Scott- Bros, have built some of the large locomotives now in use on the New Zealand railways. The deceased gentleman was born in Derby, England, in 1848, and arrived in Lyttelton in 1870. At one , time ho acted as one of the New Zealand Railway Commissioners, and he was a member of various local bodies in Canterbury. He had been in. indifferent health for a Considerable time before his death. ■ . ' • . Mr. Thomas Cotter, K.C., died yesterday morning, after a secdnd ; operation. The late Mr. Cotter, who was a little over 60 years of age, was bno of the ablest lawyers in the Dominion, and was well known in Wellington. Hβ was a son of the late Mr. Cotter, who,: was in business in Auckland as a cabinetmaker in tho early days, and his boyhood was spent there. After passing his jaw examinations he was appointed Registrar of Electors in Auckland, and subsequently he held other Government offices in that city. When quite a young man he became City Solicitor in Auckland, and retained the appoint- !■ ment until his death. On October 2, 1874, ho was admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court, and he was appointed a King's Counsel on November 20, 1911. Mr. Cotter's last appearance in a Wellington Court was a few weeks ago a3 counsel for Mr. W. Blomfield in the "Observer" cartoon case, and\wo or three clays after his return to Auckland he underwent an operation. He was married to Miss Hanna (sister of Mr. J. C. Hanna, inspector of the New Zealand Insurance Company, and Mr. S. Hanna, of Auckland), and is survived by her and a grown-up family. Dr. Robert Stout and Dr. T. Duncan , Stout, sons of His Honour tho Chief Justice. (Sir Robert Stout), who nre on their way back from Great Britain as passengers on, tho R.M.S. Makura, arrived at Suva from Vancouver yesterday, and are-due at Auckland on Tuesday. They will probably remain' to practise their profession in tho Do-' minion. Detective-Sergeant Cox,' of Christ-, church, who was married last week, was tlm recipient of a presentation by his fellow members of the Force. Among' the guests at the Grand Hotel at present are Mr. John Graham, Foilding: Mr. J. L. Duff, Napier; Mr. E. Green, Christchurch; Mr. J. Farquharson, Dunedin: Mr. and Mrs. W. Tringham, Pigeon Bush; Mr. J. L. Smith, Pigeon Bush; and Mr. H. F. Lorell, Hawera. '
