It is well that the publie should be reminded of the sacrifices that, hate been and are being made inconnection with the present industrial crisis and outbreak of lawless-, ness, by the wives and mothers of: the men from the country-districts who have responded to- the call of the authorities ito assist in upholding law and order. The Special Constables themselves, we nave mo doubt-. have v been thoroughly convinced by their 'treatment here _ and elsewhere of the public appreeiation- of the very real service they have rendered. Most of thein necessarily were jiut to inconvenience; they have endured hardships and danger ; and under great provocation • and in the face of serious risks to life and limb) have isWwn a self-restraint and courage [which mast always be remembered to their credit, tend to. the credit of ■ the- country which can claim them as its people-. They havo had jsome recompense in the demonstra- ! tioris of appreciation and admiration extended to them by the .great bulk of the citizens, and they h&vo had the stimulus of the excitement and , interest provided by the active participation in stirring «vehts. Away back in the country districts are the wives and the mothers of these men. Their ©nly stimulus has been the knowledge of duty well dono by their men-folk. They had no shouting crowds to stir their j blood and warm their hearts. They- ■ have had the worry and anxiety con- ■ corning the- welfare of those theylove, and they have had the added work and drudgery about the farm* the lonely ■ nights and the anxious : waits for news as to happenings 1 away yohder in the ; cities, It is well, therefore, that the- sacrifices made by tho women-folk of the recti : from the country should receive grateful remembraneo. Theirs has' not beep the least arduous part] played in the struggle against law- '< lflssncss find against tho -attempt- of the Federation of Labour to terrorise the Dominion and i(,p trade and commerce.
