REMARKS BY THE COMMISSIONER.

IMPOSSIBLE TO PROCEED. The Public Service Commissioner (Mr. T>. Robertson), made the following state* ment on the subject when ho was interviewed yesterday:-" "The resolutions which the association desired to di.icus3 with the Commissioners wore prefaced by on© in which t'iio association placed upon record 'a strong protest' against alleged different standards of valuation adopted by the Commissioner in classifying tho Public Service, other than the Post and Telegraph Department, to tho doiriment of the Post and Telegraph Department officers. "The president of the association, who headed the deputation, was asked if ho had anything m Support of such allegations, but ho. admitted that he could not substantiate tho allegations by evidence, as the 'association did not know, and had no means of finding out, the nature of the work dome by clerks in the Public Service- outside their _ own Department; that they had considered that when an -officer was designated in tho list as a clerk it would mean that ho was an officer doing ordinary routiuo duty, and had made comparisons accordingly. It was pointed out to the president of the association thata.ll officers except thoso in special positions were described simply as clerks, and that the title did not have tho meaning supposed by the association. Ono or two Barnes of officers in tho ether Departments were mentioned by the deputation, and tho work done by these officers wag explained hy the Commissioner as being clearly beyond ordinary routine work. In face of this position it Was itaggested that the conference had no ground for ;&e allegation and protest, and that they should he withdrawn. Tho conference was given time to consider ttUs, but could not see ite way to withdraw the resolution. As the resolution so clearly governed the other resolutions, which followed, it was of course jrr possible fa proceed." .
