LYTTELTON READY.
STEIKB-BHEIAKING ON MONDAY. A merchant from Christchurch was in. Wellington yesterday in connection with a consignment of fruit ex Willechra, about which ho had become a little anxious during the week. Ho spoke with the greatest confidence about tho state of things at Lyttelton. "Wo are going to open the port next Monday. Already nendy 2000 special . constables havo boon sworn in, &ml if there is any nonsense- oil the wharves wo will know precisely what to do. Everything is being doiie very quietly, but it is being dfono very thoroughly, and I doii't think thoro will be aiiy real trouble. Tho men ate very halfhearted, anH I think that they will all join the new union as soon as they get tlio elm-nee. They arc all fed up of tho Federation of Labour, and aro waiting for an opportunity to shake off their shackles."
