THE FOOT "SPECIALS."

The local foot "specials" are now being utilised in a manner entirely different from what'was the caso a week ago. They havo been thoroughly organised, and orders aro issued daily to each section. Different sections are deputed for duty at specified strategic points along the waterfront in tho daytimo, and others take thoir place at night-time, tho latter being on duty throughout tho whole of the night, always ready for a call whoro any trouble is threatening. Ono section is always distributed along tho various entrances to tho wharves, and no ono is permitted to pass in without showing a pass or satisfactorily explaining his business to tho officer in charge. Lawyers, clerks, accountants, merchants, warehousemen, tradesmen, etc., arc all included in tho ranks ,of tho" foot "specials," who aro sticking to thoir work in a manner wholly commendable. '

A number of ladies liavo volunteored to prepare afternoon tea for those on guard at the wharves, and to that oner a gas-stovo has been fitted in E Shed (at the main entrance to tho Queen's Wharf). This will also enahlo the men to prepare hot tea and coffee during tho night hours. A commissariat department has been organised, in which a number of ladies are concerned. These helpers .wish it to be known that any contributions in tho shapo of homc-mado cakes and scones would be welcomed at E Shed.

At the Buckle Street Drill Hall last evening a novel competition in singing and elocution was held between members of the Permanent Forco and the "special constables." Tho general idea was that when one side put up a performer cither to sing or recite, tho other side had to put up one that would, if possible, equal or bettor him in tho' estimation of tho audience. The entertainment, which resulted from the competition was hugely enjoyed, and tho decision—a dead hoat—ga'vu satisfaction, to all concerned,
