STRIKERS AT OPERA HOUSE.
YESTERDAY'S MEETING.
WORD FROM ARRESTED LEADERS. . A meeting of members of the three unions now on strike in Wellington— watersiders, seamen, and carters —was held yesterday afternoon in tho Opera House. No one was admitted unless ho conld show' a membership ticket of any of these unions, and an especially close guard was kept:against pressmen. It is stated-that there was a very ; large' attendance, the theatre being packed. After the meeting, a reporter learned from semi-official sources the fact that addresses had been delivered by Messrs. W. T. Mills P. Hickey, W. H. Parry, H. Stone, 11. Yoyce, and W. Dowgray. .
Messrs. J. Payne, M.P., P. C. Webb, M.P., offered their services for propaganda, work, and expressed their willingness to go anywhere they might be sent.
Various messages were received from tho striko leaders noiv under arrest, advising jiiombers of the unions not*-to relax their efforts.
The Rev. R. H. Hobday, of Brooklyn, also communicated a message from the arrested loaders, expressing the hope that the workers would not go near the gaol in which they were confined. It is said that three resolutions were carried unanimously. It was agreed that none of those present should return to work until the employers agreed to terms under which tho men should be allowed to place themselves under the scope of . their own organisation. Another resolation, proposed by Mr. W. T. Mills, was -that the work of the Federation should be carried oil without .interruption by the iren appointed to take tho places of the arrested leaders.
The third resolution was moved byMr. Glover. It took the form of a note of condolence on what was called the "industrial death" of a member of the Waterside Union, who had joined tho new Arbitration Union. - It is understood that the meeting will be resumed at 8 a.m. to-day.
