111 August last the demolition; by order of the authorities, of a part of the Machli Bazar Mosque at Cawnpore led to a serious riot, in which a number of rioters were-killed and injured, while the police also had numerous casualties. Tho riot was the sequel to innumerable meetings that had been held all over India and Burma' for two purposes(l) To condemn the action of the Government in demolishing part of tho Machli Bazar Mosque at Cawnpore to allow for street improvements and to demand its restoration; and (2) to protest against any possible. coercion by Great Britain of Turkey in regard to the recapture of Adrinnople from the Bulgarians, as otherwise the worst effects would be produced on loyal Moslems.
