NOTES ON THE RACING,
(By Telegraph.-'-Special Eoporter.l Chrlstchurch, November .12. Heavy rain overnight mado the course for the third day of the C.J.C. Meeting a little slower than on Monday, but the going was sound; and under bright sunshine, and an east wind improved as the day wore on. The threatening morning, however,, affected the attendance, which was only fair. , The hurdle race proved little more than an exercise canter for Witched, ■who, started an odds on favourite.
Sir G.. Clifford's pair, First Flight and Merry . Trick, were made good favourites in.'the Spring Nursery Handicap, .but Rencontre gave, nothing else 'a chance at,the latter end of the race, and. won comfortably from Brocade, :who failed to see the.last pinch out. First Flight's claim to .{be the best tworyear-old of the season was not enhanced by his ran to-day, though probably Deeley did not knock him- about when he found he did not get away : with 'the leaders: -
Gasoline gave. nothing else a chance in the Avon Welter. ■. ; '
In tho Canterbury Cup, Cherubini won very easily in a slow-run race, after allowing Midnight Sun to lead for nearly two -miles; Tho latter stopped very suddenly when once caught. Tho last •mile took lmin. 45 3-ssec.
Bliss' was , first out'in the Jockey Club Handicap,-and stayed in front all 'the. way, winning with a'little to spare from Potoa, who was'running on at tho finish.
, In the Oaks, Price on Bonny Helen outrode King on Waratep in the last half-furlong. Otherwise the latter might have won., The last-six furlongs was a struggle fcetween these two fillies, none of the others being near the fighting lino. Good Night was scrafcned for the Spring Nursery Handicap, for which the coupled pair, First Flight and Merry Trick, were made good favourites, but the former, with Deeley up, failed to get away .well and was never prominent. Brocade was the first to strike the rails, and led to the distance post, where Rencontre got through, and won all out by a length. Charmilla was a neck away third, and tlien right) up in the fighting lino were Hymettius and Angelina. For the Avon Welter Royal Arms was made a better favourite than Sun-, bird. The former was very anxious at the barrier, and headed two breakaways, for which Oliver paid the penalty of being suspended for the remainder of the meeting. Eventually the field was dispatched to a fair start, from which Gasoline was quickest out, and though Mosgiel and Sunbird were dangerous at the turn into the straight tho West.Coaster drew away again and in the run home ran out .to a four lengths' verdict. lloyal Arms was • a length in front- of Sanguinary, who was second to last away, and had to go round' her field at the turn. Then came Mount Victoria, Sunbird, and Mysteriacli. ■ < .1 _ Cherubini was made favourito in the Canterbury Cup, and in the very slowrun early half of the distance allowed Midnight Sun to make the pace, Thrax lying second approaching the turn into tho -straight. Deeley moved tho Derby winner up, and though Thrax showed fight for a stride or two the favourito drew away and won comfortably by Two lengths. Midnight Sun' was six lengths away. • The start of the Jockey Club Handicap was a catch one, from which Bon Reve was the first to show out, and Gapon the slowest to strike his feet, but after going a furlong Bliss was in front with-Tannliauser, Haskayne, and Crown Pearl following. -At the turn Tannhauser was done' with, and Bliss came further away from her field. Mowbray was tho first to challenge, but had to come from a bad position, and the effort told its tale at tho distance-post. Bliss was next challenged by Potoa, but stayed long enough to beat him by a neck. Mowbray was four lengths away third, and then.came Crown Pearl, Undecided, and Quarantine. In the New Zealand Oaks stakes Warstep, on tho rails, held hor position rounding the turn out of the straight, and led from Joan and Bonny Holen along the back stretch to tho six furlong post, when the latter ranged alongside the Stewards winner, and the pair drew right away from their SelcT. Inside tho. distance-post Warstep appeared to have the call, but under famishment in tho last fifty yards Bonny Helen responded, and won by a neck. Immer was eight lengths- away, and then well divided came Princess Moutoa, Historiette, and Joan. From a fair start in the Randolph Handicap Speedometer, ■ Overton, and Glenongley were the first to strike the rails. The former here drew out, and at the distance Post was three lengths clear of Secret Link and Vocation. In tho run homo Speedometer drew out to four lengths in front of Vocation, who oeat Birkful by a neck for second money. May Dalrymple and Secret Link were next. Brown Owl was best supported for the Otaw Plate. Flora Macdonald and Mnngaroa. raced out of tho barrier to the turn out of the straight, and led into the back stretch where-the latter led for a furlong when Mumura took rlinrge, and led round the turn. At tho turit into tho straight Flora-Mac-dciiaUl van round tho and entercd. it oil even terms with Gold Coin mid Mumura. Once in. the straight Flora Macdonald drew ruvav, and easily stalling off a challenge from Brown Owl rail home a good winner by nearly two lengths. There was a slightly less margin between the sccond and third horses. Gold Coin and Odessa were next. ,
