THE TRAMWAYMEN.
TO TAKE A SECRET' BALLOT. A mass meeting of the Wellington traniwaynien was held at Newtown yesterday morning to consider whether or, not they should strike- iu sympathy with ■ tho watersiders No official announcement was made as to the result of the meeting, but from another source it was ascertained that the men decided that tho question should bo determined by a secret ballot to be taken on Wednesday next. It is reported, but this is not definitely vouched for, that tho tramwaymen decided to strike a lory to • assist tho strikers. It is not considered at all .likely that tho tramw&ymen will decide in favour of a sympathy strike, which would bring trouble aftd (Hstress upon themselves without in any material way assisting the watersiders in their efforts to dislocate trade. Some at least of tho tramwaymen recognise tho futility of going on strike and are aware that tlie principal result of their doing so would be to inconvenience and antagonise tho general public. Many of the tramway employees are married men with families; some of them are buying their own homes on tho instalment' system, and taking everything into consideration, it is not at all probable that they will bring disaster upon themselves in order to confer a merely theoretical support upon tho' wntorsiders who are out on "triko.
