LOATH. TO LEAVE.
.The authorities consider that they have more than enough men in Wellington to cope with any trouble that is now likely to arise, ami ill consequence a. number of special constables were yesterday offered the opportunity of returning to their homos. It is quite possible that the strike "bosses" may' try bo revive the hopes of .thoir dispirited followers by making them believe that the "specials-" are getting tired of their work. _ That kind of talk would only bo in keeping with the Systematic misrepresentation by moans of which tho strike leaders have been trying to delude the workers and the general public; but unfortunately for them the facte of the case do not- afford them even a shred of consolation. Though an appeal was made for 200 volunteers to return home, only isl responded, arid these men rnado it very clear that they were willing and ready to conic back by the no:rt train if their services wei'o needed. Tho feeling of the men in barracks is that 'now that they arc here they \Vant ' 'to see the thing through.' Moreover, we have unquestionable authority for stating that if the necessity should arise, between 2000 and 3000 additional men frmn the country can bo landed in Wellington at very short notice. There is not a shadow of doubt that the settlers are lti deadly earnest in this irtattcr. Their interests are directly concerned in keeping tho ports open, and they moan to sea tliiit it is done, flic attempt of the Federation of labour J® car&lypo tip tracjo and industries
of the country can only bo regarded as a declaration of war on the publie, and steps am being taken to deal promptly &nd .effectually with any similar emergency that may arise in the future. Arrangements are being completed by which the men. now in camp can be got together again in a very fihort space of time, <ni(! the _ experience they Ixavo acquired during the present trouble cannot fail to eomo in useful. Thoir splendid behaviour when on duty and in the barracks has evoked much favourable comment.
