"HE NEARLY DID IT."
HOW A SEAMEN'S DELEGATE ACTED.
. '"Ho nearly did it that time. :: 'lt just shows how careful a man must be under the present circumstances." The speaker was a special constable, aud he had ' just prevented a Scameifs Union delegate from going on board the Maunganui. - Special constables wore lined up right across tho wharf when about 8 plm. 011 Saturday a man was observed to approach oho of the specials and try to get through. He was asked to show his pass but oould not do" so. Presently a Harbour Board official put in an appearance, and in an authoritative manner tried to get the man through. It was no U6e, however, the specials stood firm. Nobody was ,allowed to pass. Those were their instructions. Subsequently it was found that! tho man the Harbour Board official tried to pass through the lines was a delegate from tho Seamen's Union. Ho was employed on the Willochra as fireman. When asked why ho was so anxious to get aboard tho Maunganui he replied: "I havo a wire from Lyttelton, and I havo been instructed to deliver the message in .person. The message is to tell those chaps on board tho Maunganui to keep in." 1 Suffice it to say tho fireman did not get on board.
