Various speeches defending day labour against the contract system have been made by Mr. Griffith (Minister of Publio Works) and Mr. Holman (State Premier), who alleged tho existence of a combine amongst Government contractors. ~ Mr. Holman recently alleged that contractors had agreed as to who should send tho lowest tender, and' took turns in getting big Contracts. ' A special'meeting of the Master Builders' Association warmly resented the charges, and resolved in the publio interest that they should be substantiated. The builders pledged themselves to ascertain the truth of the matter.
