A TRIBUTE TO THE "SPECIALS."
The special constables who arc doing such effective work in maintaining pcacc and restraining violence in tho City aro receiving tho recognition they deserve from citizens. It is not a pleasant task that these men have undertaken! but it is a very necessary one, and they are doing it in a manner that is deserving of tho highest praise. Their forbearance in the face of great provocation is a most convincing reply to adverse criticism,' and has put to shame the gross .slanders uttered by a few reckless people. The citizens of Wellington arc anxious to give practical expression of their appreciation of the publicspirited conduct of the "specials," and to show their emphatic disapproval of tbo cowardly attacks which lava bees aiado wan them inj
certain quarters. Ail effort is being made_ to provide some form of .entertainment for them, and to increase the variety of their commissariat; find generally to make their stay in Wellington As pleasant as the exceptional circumstances per' mit. The Citizens' Defence Committee has taken the matter up, and OS_ soon as the general public ascertain just what is required a very hearty responfio can he confidently relied upon, Tito cordial manner in which they wore cheered as they passed through tho City yesterday on their; way back to the barracks after their day's work was done was an emphatic proof, if such were needed, that tho overwhelming majority of the community are in full sympathy with the. precautions that have been taken to prevent the lawless element from taking charge of the City. It was also a decided mark of respect for the special constables personally, as well as for their fine appearanco and praiseworthy behaviour. The "specials'' on foot have also done excellent service in co-operating with the mounted men from tho country,
