Parr) was asked by a deputation to suggest to the employers, so as to facilitate ft settlement, if they wore prepared _ to negotiate without making it a primary condition that tire union should register under the Arbitration Act. Representatives of the watersiders said ib was believed that if the Il.mitly strike was settled it. would materially assist a settlement locally. The Mayor said ho would be pleased to represent to the employers -that there would be no harm in postponing work by free labour till Friday. The Auckland Executive of tTfo Employers' Federation bad informed him that tho employers in New Zealand were acting together in this matter, and had decidod that the time had arrived for some more satisfactory working conditions than obtained in the existing agreements. Therefore, he was of the opinion that there was little use in approaching them again, but if the deputation held strong views on tho matter it was open to them to go direct to the Emploporß' Federation, which no doubt would bo ready to receive them. Tho Mayor, added that ho recognised that if thp ' Huntly strike was settled it would cloar tho decks considerably.
