HOW GREYMOUTH STANDS.
(By TelcErapfc.—Press Association.! Hokltlka, November 5. Tho s.s. Kairaki arrived at Greymouth on Sunday with about 100 tons of genoral cargo for that part and 60 tons for Hokitika. Tho Greymouth waterside workers refused to allow her to be discharged or loaded ■ there. _ Tho Kairaki left Greymouth for Hokitika shortly before noon to-day arriving here about two hours later. Thero was plenty of labour available, mostly the usual wharf hands, and tho cargo was discharged immediately on arrival. Tho Greymouth goods wero unloaded into trucks from the ship's slings, and are being railed to their destination to-night. Tho Kairaki has commenced to load two hundred thousand feet of sawn timber for tho East Coast and it is expected that she will finish loading and sail to-mor-row. Tho Defender, which also loaded at this port- sailed last night for Lvttclton, plenty of labour being available for discharging and loading this steamer.
It is reported that a large njimber of sawmill hands in this district declare that they have absolutely 110 sympathy with the methods of the leaders of tho present strike. They state that if there is any difficulty in loading tlio vessels they are prepared to assist in the work. Manv of them aro settled hero with their families and fear that tho closing down of tho sawmills would mean great hardship to themselves and families.
