NO MAORIS AS "SPECIALS."
NATIVE MINISTER'S ATTITUDE. The Native (Maori) Congress at present sitting in Wellington went into the matter of Natives enrolling as special ' constables. As a result of tho discussion a letter was forwarded to tho Minister.of Native Affairs (the Hon. W.- H. Herries), who stated in reply that tho Government' had no wish for the Maoris to enrol as "specials," or to act as free labourers, or to have anything to do with the striko. A Dominion reporter was informed that in taking-this action the Congress thought it would be much better it the Maori was left out of the trouble, and it was also pointed out that the Congross Ihacl no direct feeling for either side. :
