POSJNATUS LEADS ALL THE WAY.
RECORD ATTENDANCE;
DETAILS OF THE RACING
By ToleffMiph—Press Association—CoDjffdelit (Reo. November 4, 11.20 p.m.) Melbourne, November 4. Although n keen, biting, westerly wind, with showers of hail and rain must have kept crowds of people away, the grandstand at Flemington did not contain an empty seat at eleven o'clock. By two o'clock the extensive accommodation waa badly overtaxed, and many wero unable to do any business in the betting ring. The shilling admission flat charge was imposed for the first time in the history of tlio meeting, but did not affect the crowd, and the Cup was witnessed by the biggest multitude ever seen on Flemington, probably exceeding 150,000. The Governor-General (Lord Donnian) discarded his motor, and drove to the course in the State carriage, with outriders and a military guard. Nearly 300 police, were required for I duty. Soven o'clook in the evening saw hundreds of people still waiting for trains. Altogether, it was the biggest Cup day on record. The big race was neither' so meritorious in performance nor so exciting as many of its predecessors. Tho slow Vaco heat some of tho best horses. Posinatus, which was only sent over from Sydney as a second thought, head* ed the field for the whole distance. For a moment only it appeared that Be» love would catch the leader, and onco, when rounding the turn, Sea Prince's supporters proclaimed him the winner, hut a fow more strides sottled their doubts. Amidst a 1 roar from_ the flat, Shanahan, last yeat's Cup winner, got his horse away, and riding him right out, landed the .big prize. Although Posinatus was fancied .by the stable, many Sydney sportsman considered his form in tho Craven Plate misleading, and gavo him no chance. His rider said that for the first- mile Posinatus noarl.v pulled his arms off, and, tired of holding ,him back, ho settled down to ride him when Sea Pfinco challenged. M'Lachlan, tho rider of Beragoon, said that the slow pace had killed him. Killorn said that ho had every chance, but Sea Princo was not good enough. . Tho other racing calls for little comment, except to commend Bullawarra, who Tan a groat race under a heavy woight. He is undoubtedly the finest jumper in Australia.
