A Maori war veteran, Colour-Sergeant Richard Shepherd, N.Z.C., late H.M. 68th Foot, and Now Zealand Armed Constabulary, died in Auckland on Sunday, agod .75. Colour-Sergeant Shopherd obtained tho New Zealand Cross by several acta of romarkable bravery in tho action at Otauto on March 13, 1869. With sis volunteers ho undertook to hold a position whilo a reconnaissance wa.s made. A foreo of Maoris eatno up. and m the subsequent skirmish three of tho seven men wero Bhot dead, and tho remaining four wounded. Col-our-Sergeant Shepherd was struck _in the ncek, tho _ bullet only just missing the jugular vein. On another occasion he held a ridgo behind Ngatapa Pa for four days with a small party.
