PAYING OFF CREWS.
BOATS LAID UP AT LYTTELTON. (By Telceraph.-Fross Association.) Chrlstohurch, November 3. There is no change ill the situation at Lyttolton to-day, and matters wore, in an .y' ; ' l ' l| g) quieter than last week. Iho fourth day of tho Lyttolton strike oponed with an almost deserted port. Tile only vossels at tho wharf wore tho lorry steamer Maori, tho collier Canopus, tho timber-laden Opouri, and three small schooiiors. Out in tho stream wore tho colliors Kini and Knitongata. There wero busy times in tho Government shipping oilico this morning, whoro tho superintendent and his assistant wero engaged in signing off tho crows of tho several ships. The schooners Annie Hill and Morning Light aro paying off their crows, pnd tho wholo of the crew of tho Union Company's collier Kaitaiigata, which is lying at anchor ill tho stream with a full load of coal on board from Newcastio, wore paid off at noon to-day. Tho master, chief and second officers, chief engineer, and cook aro tho only remaining members of the crew on board. The crew of tho Canopus wero paid off this afternoon, and sho has gono out into the stream. _Tho small steamer Wootton, with a shipment of cattle from Foxton, anchored in the stroam at 9,30 o'clock last night. Sho was bound to Kaiapoi, but was unable to get in over tho Kaiapoi bar last night, owing to tho tide not boing suitable. She sailed at 4.30 a.m. to-day for Kaiapoi, and landed her cattle on tho river bank. 'Her future movements aro uncertain.
