MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
THE TREATMENT OF A HORSE. Mr. J. S. Evans, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. Inspector Seed, of tbe Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, proceeded against J. Kerslako and William Leonard, employees of the City Corporation, for cruelly ill-treating a liorso by allowing it to bo worked in an unlit condition. Mr. It. B. Williams appeared for the S.P.C.A., and Messrs. O'Shea, E. M. Beechey, and T. Young for tho defendants, and on behalf of tho City Corporation. It was alleged that on September 29 Inspector Seed had observed the horse driven by defendant Leonard. The horso had been taken to a veterinary surgeon who had pronounced it unfit for the work required of it. In spite of warning, however, the horso had been worked on the following day. The caso was adjourned till to-day after hearing portion of tho evidence. THE COCKER SPANIEL. William Bolton pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing a cocker spaniel valued at £5, and the property- of Sarah Gill, on or about October 26. Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for accused. Tho evidence was conflicting and at its conclusion His Worship decided to give accused tho benefit of tho doubt and dismiss the caso. OTHER COURT CASES. Tor insobriety three first of/onders wero fined 10s., and another v.t.s convicted and discharged. On a ,- imilar offence James Rhodes was convictid and discharged. Robert Matthew, for breach of his prohibition order was fun d 40s. A plea of guilty was entered by Harry Fleming on a charge of dLob.-ying a maintenance order against lii.n. An order was made that defendant be imprisoned for fourteen days, the w.srrant to be suspended so long as he paid the Court payments accniin;', duo and the sum of 53. per week oii the i'lo of arrears. No appearance was made by Ernest Cecil Davy on a charge of failing to provide adequate maintenance for his mother. Defendant was ordered to pay ss. weekly. THE FURNJTIUI3 CASE. ' Conclusion of the.hearing of the civil claim of William Aubrey against John Hall Flockton for tho sum of £157 9s. for furniture sold to defendant by plaintiff's housekeeper, Je.ur Millard, was reached at the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon, bei'oro Mr. J. S. Evans, S.M. It was stated by Mr. D. Jackson, counsel for defendant, that ho had been unable to subpoena Miss Millard, so that the evidence of the caso would be closed. Tho evidence was then traversed by both counsel, and His Worship reserved his decision. SERIOUS CHARGE. William Birch, a married man, and a butcher by . trade, was charged with a certain offence on a girl of eleven years at Johnsonvilln, on September 19. Accused was remanded until bail being allowed, himself in £100 and an approved surety of £200.
