JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. lFrom Our Special Correspondents.) NAPIER. A now canning company has been formed at Eastings, to be known as theHawke's Bay l''ruit Canning Co., Limited. It : s intended to commence operations this season. • The total rainfall recorded in Napier last nioiith was 4.09 inches. During last week tho revenue from the Napier tramways amounted to £174 16s. lid. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning a man named Henry Kaynor was fined £10 for ill-treating a horse. A sum of £150 10s. Gd. resulted from tho Plunket Saturday collection. Tho Napier Ladies' Golf Club have elected the following officers. —President, Mrs. G. N. I'harazyn; vice-presi-dent, Mrs. G. H. Kelly; captain, Mrs.. Hector Smith; hon. secretary, Miss Gladys liernau. The Rev. H. L. Blamires was yesterday elected president of tho Napier Ministers' Association. PALMERSTON. Last evening tho Mayor opened the l?oman Catholic Church bazaar for which preparations had been made on a big scale for many months past. The object of the bazaar is to start a fund for building the new St. Patrick's Church. The bazaar continues throughout tho week. Tho stalls are in charge of the following:—Produce, Mrs. Hickoy; art, Mesdames Sim and H. N. Watson; St. Vincent do Paul stall, Mrs. Waddy; novelty stall, Miss Scanlan; liijsh stall, Mrs. Devinc; flower stall, Mrs. Pope; sweets stall, Misses Sullivan and Butler; refreshments, Mrs. Taylor. Owing to Mr. P. Hally being detained bv labour disturbances in Wellington the proposed conference concerning the Palmcrstou Coach Workers' dispute, arranged for to-day, is indefinitely postponed: A motor-car collided with a trap in Church Street on Sunday evening, fatally injuring tho horse, breaking the. shafts, and damaging the car. Tho October rainfall locally was six inches. The greatest fall was on October 10—1} inches. • Saturday's rain caused the postponement of bowling matches for the Dixon Cup and Yates Feathers. The benefit given b.y tile J. C. Williamson Opera Company for the family ol the !ato Mr. AV. Follas realised £42 which the Mayor has handed to Mrs. Follas. Tho meeting called by the Mavor on Saturday resolved to hold Hospital Saturday on December 20. A strong committee was appointed, with the Mayor as chairman, and Mr. Stubbs as secretary. , Mr. F. J. Nathan narrowly escaped collision'between his motor and a train at a crossing yesterday. Tho event happened when a Jong train, which had held'tip the traffic, passed tho crossing. Mr. Nathan then drove ahead, but another train came toward him. Mr. Nathan stopped his car quite close to tho engine and jumped out. The enginedriver also stopped. Only inches separated them. WANCANUI. At the annual meeting of the Wanganui Amateurs Swimming Club, officers were •elected as follow Patron, Mr. A. Hatrick; president, Mr. D. M'Farlano; captain, Mr. A. Muller; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. D. Itoachc; delegates to Wanganui Centre, Messrs. C. Swan, J. D. Roache, and A. Miller; delegato to the Royal Life Saving Society, Messrs. N: Hoggart and C. Swan. It was decided to open the season on November 15.
The engineer of the Waitotara County Council reports that though men wero more plentiful now than was tho case some months ago, and the council has a hundred hands employed in road maintenance and construction, tlio supply of labour is still considerably below the demand. Ho also reports that recent road slips in tbo Ahu Ahu and Te Tiilii disifricits cost several hundred pounds to repair. Work on the up-river roads is proceeding steadily, and nine miles of new roads have been recently added to existing communications in the districts mentioned.
MASTERTON. The Opalci Rifle Club completed its first trophy shoot over tho 300, 500, and 600 yards ranges on Saturday. The result is that A. Lewin and R. J. Smith win for the Thursday and Saturday squads respectively, cach with a score of 95. • Anniversary services in connection with the Methodist Sunday School were held an Sunday, the pulpit being occupied by the Rev. G. D. Cook, of Thorndon. The congregations, considering the weather, were large,' and tho special music rendered by the choir was much appreciated. A handicap medal competition, played on Saturday in connection with the Masterton Golf Club, was won by 31. Foley. Tho final for the junior championship, over 36 holes, botween J. Milno and J. Archer, was won by. the former by 6 up and sto play. In tho final for the Guy AVilliams trophy, C. Perry beat J. Caselbcrg by 2 up and 1 to play. The best gross medal score by any member of the club, white taking part in matches or competitions during the present season, was made by A. B. Lawrence with a score of 79.
TAIHAPE. At a meeting of the committee of the Taihape Defence Rifle Club, it was decided to officially open the season on November 6. A donation of 2000 rounds of ammunition from MessrH. G. Sutherland and J. G. Turnbull was received with thanks. The dates of the annual musketry course were fixed for November 14 and 16. It is expected that a team representing Taihape will compete at the Exhibition meeting. During the quarter ended September 30, 1913, the Taihape Magistrate's Court sat 38 times, amounts sued for totalled £1057 Ss. 4d., and of this £641 10s. 4tl. was recovered. The sum of £51 18s. was paid in civil fees, and_ £3 6s. in criminal fees. Fines for various offences amounted to £18. Fourteen old age pensions were granted. ■ The Taihape Borough Council is now accepting loans of £10 and upwards from any persons or corporations, bearing interest at the rate of 4 per cent, per annum, and repayable on demand. Puring the year ended March 31, 1913. 18 building permits, 'representing a value of £10,000, wero issued, and during tho succeeding seven months 10 permits', valued at £5500, have been given out. The cold, wet, and disagreeable weather which wo were treated to for some time has now disappeared, and has boen replaced by real summer. Tho
heat has been at times oppressivo—aß much as 82 degrees in tho sltado, which is a record hero for this time of tho year. Shearing has commenced, and if tho present weather conditions continue, it will be finished in good time. Already, Mohaka and Kakariki Stations havo forwarded portions of their now clips for tho first wool sale in Napier, wlion it is hoped good priceß will prevail. Settlers in tho district aro eagerly looking forward to tho new motor scrvico which it is purposed running between here and Napier. It will no doubt provo most beneficial in tho reduction of fares and quicker time, as at present the coach fares aro high, and travelling is rather uncomfortable. Another magistrate is much needed hero, residents in tho back-blocks having deeds to sign and witness before a Justice of the Peace have long distances to travel to find one. A magistrate near, say, AVaikari or Kakariki, is desirable. Tho passing of the Land Bill has given great satisfaction here, and a number of anti-freeholders, who voted against tho present Government at tho last election, will give it heartv support twelve months hence. v
