JOHN AIRE AND COMPANY CLOSE DOWN. The announcement that the works of the famous engineering firm of Messrs. J. Aird and Co., London, are shortly to bo closed down was cabled recently, and lias since been confirmed. Sir John Aird, the second baronet, became head of the firm two years ago, on the death of his father. • Originally founded by the first John Aird in 1848, the business owes its position in tho front rank of the world's contractors chiefly to the first baronet, who died in 1911. The greatest work connected with tho history of the organisation is that of damming tho Nile, but they have been engaged on many other undertakings in the most progressive countries of the work], among them being the removal of the Crystal Palace to Sydenham, tho construction. of the Manchester Ship Canal, and numerous railway, canal, water, and gas undertakings. The late Sir John Aird left a fortune of over £1,000,000.
