Ashburtorl, November' 1. , A call is being made for applications from able-bodied men willing to proceed to 'Lyttolton to assist in tho work of keeping the port open. _ Applications are also invited for special constables. Ex-volunteers, and those who are able to provide horses, aro preferred, but selection will not by any means bo confined to such. ,At a largely attended meeting of farmers of tlio Ashburton County, convened by the Farmers'' Union to-day to discuss the position brought about by tho waterside workers' strike, tho following resolution was Unanimously carried: "That this representative meeting of the Ashburton Farmers' Union, Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and Ashburton Branch of the North Canterbury Seed and Grain Association, expresses its deepest regret that the Dominion has been so recklessly precipitated into •another strike, and that it is imperative in tho interests of all that business communications between all parts of the Dominion should be kept open, and that with this end in view, a committee bo appointed to receive applications from ablo-bodied men who are willing, on receiving reasonable notice, to assist in work at our port or ports.
