CARRIAGE OF MAILS.
BTATE STEAMERS IF NECESSARY. One matter that will demand _ atten*tion if the strike, instead of being settled as now appears possible, should extend to tho seamen, is tho carriage of mails by sea. When inquiries were mado on tho subjeat yesterday, it was ascertained that, if other means of communication failed, tho Government steamers would bo employed in this duty.
