HARDSHIP ON FARMERS.
SUSSING THE HOME MARKETS. ■ (Dj* Tehf.!rßr«i. Afisooio-tioit.)
Ghristchurofi, November S. Tlio North Canterbury Farmers' Union Ims issued tho following manifesto to waterside workers at Lyttulton: "While wo cannot but admirft tho spirit of loyalty which has prompted vou to ccaso work in support of your confreres in other centres, we much regret that your action is causing, and is likely to cause, considerable loss to fnrmora and tho whole community, and while wo li&vo every oyiMatke with tho
legitimate aspirations of labour, fro submit that the striko method is th-a worst possible moana of securing that objective. At 'the present- momo-fit thoro is ft largo quantity of produce and. merchanaißO awaiting shipment and landing, nnd to hold up this business will entail soriouß and irroparablo loss, lnrtieulnrly is this tho caSo in rognrd to dairy produce, ivhich, as you May know, is. tho product of the email farmer. This, if barred from .shipment, will miss the Home market, ut tho best part of the season —namely, tliq winter months. Moreover, tho email fanners' wool clip will also bo blocked, and thus miss the first sale of tho series in London. Under these conditions we trust that wiser counsels will prevail, and that work will bo resumed as heretofore, leaving any question at issue to bo sottled by arbitration, or other conciliatory methods. Failing this the farmers of North Canterbury may bo compelled, much as they regret it, to tako such action as may bo deemed necossars' to ensure that the work of londing and un> loading shall proceed."
