EFFORTS TO SETTLE. ' UNSUCCESSFUL UP TILL NOW. STRIKERS' SPIRIT BROKEN. By Tolssrraph—Press Association—Copyright (Hoc. November 2, 6.6 p.m.) London, November 1. Mr. Gosling and Alderman Bowerman's eii'orts to settle tho Dublin striko havo failed. Tho rumoured intention to offer tho Employers' Parliamentary Committees a guarantee that the Workmen will honourably execute agreements, has led to Larkini'tes to protost against English interference. They claimed tho right to settlo matters, themselves. Mr. Gosling assured the btrikers thero would be no settlement over the traaSport workers' heads. It is not likely thero will be a settle-' mcnt beroro Christmas. Meanwhile tho strikors' spirit is broken. The tram-cars and tho majority of the coal carts aro allowed to pass unmolested. All tho pawnshops aro full, and tho pawnbrokers refuso to receive any more pledges. Dublin's lo3s over tho strike is estimated at three-quarters of a million (£750,000), INDISCRETION OF SPEECH. SHOULD NOT BE PENALISED. (Reo. November 2, 6.6 p.m.) London, November 1. Tho "Chronicle" appeals to tho Ri. Hon. A. Birroll, Chief Secretary for Ireland, to release Larkin on tho ground that it is wrong and unwise to penalise a man for indiscretion of speech. Referring to Sir Edward Carson, it quotes that, what in tho eaptain is a choleric word is in tho soldier a flat i blasphemy, and it urges Mr. Birrell not to allow tho mephitio vapours of j Dublin Castle to obfouro his vision.
