PADDON WINS.

THE SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP. ARNST'S STERN CHASE. CHAMPION IN FRONT FROM THE START. By Telflffr&pli—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. Novembor 2, 6.5 p.m.) Sydnoy, November 1. • Tho race for tho Australian Sculling Championship,' "Tho ' Referee" Challenge Cup, and £200 aside was rowed on tho l'arramatta River to-day. It resulted as follows: — James Paddon, of Evans Head (the holdor), 1 Richard Arnst, of Sydnoy (tho challenger) — 2 Tho weather was fine and thero was a great crowd in all kinds of craft along the course and lining tho banks. Paddon led throughout eventually winning by six lengths. Time, 21min. 48soc. Tho first mile was covored in 6min. ISsec. Tho race was rowed on the slack sido of tho water. In tho early part of the race tho water was smooth, but afterwards there was a choppy wind. This was not sufficient to interfere much with either sculler. Paddon won the choice of positions. He was quickor away and soon had a slight lead, both rowing splendidly. At the end of the first mile Paddon was a good longth in front. At Putney he had increased his load to a length and a half, which, in spite of Arnst's strenuous efforts, ho held to tho Gasworks. Arnst's spurt slightly reduced the lead at that_ stage, but Paddon responding, established a two-lengths' lead. Arnst came again gamely, but tho champion easily held him, and from that out steadily forged ahead. Arnst fought gamOly to th©_ finish, having rowed a great, gruelling, stern chase from the first few strokes.
