SERIOUS CHARGE. Oannovlrko, November 1 Walter James Haslcr, n'ko ifai arrested at Kaitoko on Friday, was remanded to appear at Pongaroa on Tuesday next on a serious charge, alleged to hav-p been committed at Puketoi on Wednesday last. Accusod, a .young man, said ho desired to plead guilty' and savo the production of witnesses, but tlio remana was granted, to enable somo evidence to bo taken to send on to tho Supreme Court. Wi'son were charged with taking and killings opossums at Fivo Rivers Estate, contrary to the provisions of tlio Animals Protection Act. Tho proceedings were taken by tho Southland Acclimatisation Society, for which Mr. Eustace Russell appeaired. After hearing lengthy evidence, Sir. Young, S.M., convicted tho defendants! and imposed fines and costs aggregating £'11 15s.
