Madams Evelyn Solig,' of Brisbane, has been engaged to sing the soprano solos in the Royal Choral Society's performance of "Tho Messiah," at Wellington, on December 15. Tho Rev. J. Patterson, chairman of the lona Collego Committee, is at present 011 a visit to Hastings to attend an oxccutiv© meeting of that body. Tho death occurred at Auckland last wee-kj states tho "Star," at Stanley Point of Mr. William Andrew Cowan, ono of tho fine settlers who did so much for tho Dominion in its young days it needed tho very best typo of colonists it could seenro. After tho exciting times of tho war Mr. Cowan followed farming for a considerable time, and eventually moved to Auckland,' wliero ! 110 was weighniaster for tho Auckland Harbour Board for twenty years. Deceased leaves a widow, one daughter, and six sons, two of the last-mentioned being Mr. James Cowan, a leading authority on Maori loro and customs.
