SAD DROWNING FATALITY. RESCUERS' BRAVE CONDUCT. Invercargilli November 2. , At the inquest touching tho drowning of Patrick Hughes evidence showed that deceased, with his brothers Michael and Edwards, and a man named Husband, 'attempted to cross New River in a flatbottomed boat. There was a Btrong wind blowing, and tho was rough. Deceased was sitting at one end of the boat keeping it balanced, 'and when within two chains of the land deceased fell -backwards into the water. Edward dived in after him, but was patted from deceased by a big wave. Michael then dived in, but lost sight of deceased, and swam ashore in a half-conscious condition. Edward drifted ashore, and was picked up unconscious. Deceased was subject to fits, and it was suggested thnt a seizure was responsible for his falling out, or that one of the rowers missed a stroke, causing the boat to lurch The coroner returned a verdict of accidental death, and placed on record the brave conduct of Edward and Michael Hughes and Husband. PECULIAR FATALITY. Auckland, November 1. A man\named William Gillcttly was drowned in & creek near Whnkatane through a cart capsizing and falling on top of him. INQUEST AT GORE. Core, November 1. At tho inquest <>n Mrs. Janet Dicksen, aged 48, who, it was believed, jumped off the traffio bridge into the river on 4ugust 29, and whoso body was discovered oil Mr. Noble s farm, opposite the Gore racecourse, evidently washed up by the flood waters, and caught on a fence, a verdict of found drowned was returned.
