WOMEN'S ORCHESTRAS.
Maud Powell believes that'women should play in symphony and other orchestras if they want the work. But "if they accept the work they should bo prepared to accept no privileges because of their sex." John. C. If'round suggests that an orchestra of women should be established in New York with Maud Powell as conductor. Such an orchestra would not be a new thing. Women ensemble players aro rapidly coming to the fore. "There is the wellknown Fadettes Orchestra, of Boston; there is a fine women's symphony orchestra in Loa Angeles, with Olara Toy in the concert-master's chair.; thero is the noted Aeolian Ladies' Orchestra in London, England, now over twenty years old, with a woman conductor; there is the Olive Mead Quartet, the Amorican String Quartet, there are women who •play in the Hartford Symphony Orchestra; not long ago, in Detroit, Mich., the ladies of the Fine Art? Society ortanised a string quartet', for which llsa B/uegger was solo 'cellist. The Soldat String Quartet ie known throughout Germanv, and the Nora Clench Quartet holds its own. against many masculine rivals."
