ready, and tho longer the strike continues tlio moro expensive will become the price of those commodities that cannot readily be replaced. Tho price of potatoes, for example, has risen from £3 10s. to £9 per ton in a week, and naturally tho retail price has risen in sympathy. Flour per 251b. bag, which was selling a few days ago for 35., is now 45., and the 601b. bag has risen from ss. 6d. to 7s. P/d. Sugar, stocks of which are rapidly becoming depleted, has advanced in prico jd. per lb. So far butter has nob been advanced in price as far as the wholesale supply is concerned, but some of the retailers, have already advanced tho price beyond the normal Ls. 3d. per lb. Oatmeal has gone up in price as the result of short stocks. The 251b. ] bag ■ which was selling for 4s. 3d. on Thursday is now 4s. 9d. Stoeks of oat- ] ina and gestina ,are also very low. It is understood that some of the Wellington bakershave already had to give up baking owing to their flour having given out. It is not within the financial 'power of some of the« smaller bakers to lay in big Btooks as it is so much money lying idle, and they often sail pretty close to the wind, knowing that, as a general thing, 8 supply is readily available.
