H. B. IRVING AND THE SAVOY.

Since tho days of Gilbert and Sullivan (says tho London "Telegraph") the Savoy has passed through many vicissitudes. Like other theatres, it has had its ups and its downs. Its now tenant, Mr. H. IS. Irving, has, however, the good wishes of everyone for that ful l measure of prosperity which tho house enjoyed while under tho control of Mr. 11. D'Oyly Cnrto. Apart from his appearance at tho Royal ]>erformanco of "London Assurando" at the St. James's, he has not been seen in London since November, t.lso interval between then and now being devoted to a toilr in South Africa. But his wanderings are, for a/ time, at least, over, and one may fairly regard the Savoy as his permanent home. Saturday, October 4, has been fixed for its! reopening; on that evening Mr. Irving will present for the first time a four-act play entitled "Lo Grand Seigneur," by the late Mr. Edward Ferris and Sir. B. P. Matthews. The action is laid in tho early period of the French devolution, a period which, although liberally drawn upon In dramatists, still contains abundant material for proiitahlo use. The production of "Le Grand Seicneur" brings back to the West End ■stage Miss Marie Lohr, who has been engaged by Mr. Irving as leading lady nt the Savov. Miss Lohr has also been smnothing of an absentee, tho last nart played by her being that of Lcita Gale in "Doormats" at ■ AVyndliam's. ITcr return will be heartily welcomed bv all sections of theatre-poors, particularly as tho character allotted lier is said to be of an nmistiallv effective description, and designed to give her every opportunity for the exercise of hor delightful talents.
