« MEETING Op THE CITY COUNCIL. At last night's meeting of the Wellington City Council, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided, and there were also present-: Councillors W. H. I'. Barber, G. .Frost, J. Godbcr, A. 11. Atkinson, W. J. Thompson, J. Fuller, jun., E. Trogear, L. M 'Ivenzio, R. A. Wright, J. E, Fitzgerald, 11. Fletcher, T. C. A. Hislop, M. M. F. Luckie, and A. H. Hindmarsh. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor H. Ruddle. It was decided to inform tho Eastbourno Borough Council that tho City Council had fully considered tho question of the purchase of the recreation grounds at Day's Bay, and could not cooperate in tho suggested purchase, it beingr pointed out that tho offer did not include the bush. It was 'decided to inform tho Wellington Motor-car, Horse-drivers' and Livery Stahlo Employees' Union that tho council could not alter tho terms of the previous agreement existing between tho corporation drivers and the council, the Mayor.remarking that tho Finance Committee did not feel justified in reopening tho question until tho next financial year. It was decided that tho request of tho Maramii and Lyall Bay Surf Clubs for a donation of £10 towards their expenses in connection with a gala to be held at Lyall Bay on Saturday, November 22, bo declined, and that, the clubs be informed that it is rpgretted the services of tho Tramway Band cannot bo granted for the occasion. On the recommendation of the ByLaws Committee, it was decided that two lamps be erected at- Donald M'Lean Street and Normanby Street at a cost of £12 55., as recommended by the Electrical Engineer. The application of Mr. James Bonnie for permission to erect two additional floors on a building at the corner of Sydney Street and Molesvorth Street (permission for the erection of sucli building to the height of two stories having, been granted bvthe council, subject to certain conditions imposed by tho Citv Engineer) was refused, as in the opinion of the By-Laws Committee the exit arrangements from the upper portion of the building would not bo of a satisfactory character. Tho By-Laws Committee recommended that the owners of Harbour View Ritrht-of-Way, off Bonleott Street, be called upon to put the wayjn repair, in accordance with the specification to be prepared by the City Engineer.—Tho recommendation was agreed to. It was reported by the Bv-Lawr, Committee that they have received a renort frbin the officers that tho petition from the occupic'rs of drapers, clothiers, and mercers' shops in tho city, desiring that the closing hours of such shops be fixed nt 6 o'clock, does not contain the names of a majority of the occupiers of such shops, and tho committee have to recommend that tho petitioners be informed accordingly.—Tho report was adopted.
