OPENING DAY. STOCK AND OTHER AWARDS, (By Telejrrapli.—Special Reporter.) Carterton, October 29. ; Tlio thirty-sixth show of tho Waira'fcapa and East Coast P. and A. Society was opened' at Carterton to-day. For the'first time in fivo years the weaiiier .was-fine for the opening day, but there tire predictions of rain for to-morrow. Tliero was a fair number of peoplo on .<the ground to-day, and a big crowd is 'bxpcctcd to-morrow. Tliero is a-fine 'display of .stock. Of tho two beef breeds tlio Shorthorn is strong, but only two Herefords liavo come forward. Tlio Shorthorns are splendid. Many of the prizes in theso classes go to Hawko's Bay, to Messrs. R. D. D. M'Lean (tho , chief winner) and W. T. Williams.. Carterton always draws forth good dairy cattlo. Mr. .W. I. Lovolock, of Palmorston North, is the most successful Holstein exhibitor. Porirua Mental Hospital, Mr. J. Kyle, and Mr. David Buchanan take the Ayrshire honours, and Mr. E. Eagle, of Belvcdorc, is the chief Jersey winner, with Mr. S. R.
