MUX RELUCTANT TO STRIKE. (iiy Telegraph.—Proas Asaoouition.) • Christchurch, October 29. Matters wore very quio-t. in Lyttelton to-day, and work was proceeding as usual. There was, 'however, a distinct feeling of uneasiness amongst waterside workers and shipping people in Lyttelton, and the situation ■ seemed to be regarded as a very delicate on®. A reporter, in conversation with several waterside workers, gathoied that there was a very strong feeling amongst the men that the strike would be ail extremely foolish step on their part. They stated that the men in I.ytteilon wore not in a position to strike with any hopo of holding out. They had just como 1 through an extremely had winter from a wago-carr.ing point of view, and had been looking forward to the approaching wool season. As far as could bo gathered there was a strong feeling on the part of a large, number of men against anything in the- nature of a strike. It is understood that some trouble was caused by the- men working tiro collier Waiteniata at Lyttelton this morning. A quantity of Newcastle coal was being transferred to the hulk Lota ami tho men, thinking that, the coal was consigned to, Tima.ru, refused to put it off. On inquiries being made at tho local office of the Union Company, however, it was discovered that the coal was intended for Lyttelton, and the work of transferring tho cargo then proceeded without further trouble. A mass meeting of members of tho Lyttelton Waterside Workers' Union was held to-night, but great' seerec.v is being observed and information as to tho result of the meeting was refused. Tho general opinion, however, in strongly against strike.
