Matters were exceedingly qijiot at Ricearton this morning, and not n gallop of any importance was accom- ! pushed.
Mr. F. H, Pvno sustained a severe loss last night by tlio death of his two year-old filly Back Chat. While galloping on tho Riecarton tracks yesterday morning Back Chat broke a blood vessel, but at that time no serious results were anticipated. Tho filly's condition became much worso later in the day, and sho died last evening. Back Chat liad shown a good deal of paeo on the tracks, and although her only • effort, viz., in- tho Hawko's Bay Stakes, was not crowned .with success, it was generally recognised that sho was more than useful. Back Chat was a full sister to Historiett<; ? and as a yearling was sold for 210 guineas. Sho was bred by Mr. I. 6. Duncan. This morning's ferry steamer brought the following racehorses from Wellington: —Kilts, Honesty, Charmilla, Oldfield, Emperador, Bandoira, Bon Revo, Gargaron, Prelusive, Somniform, Good Night, La Roina, Bleriot, Merry Roe, affld Hunakaha. Should tho watorsido workers' strike not bo settled in tho course of tho next wcok tho offeot on tho Canterbury JocIcoy, Cluhis Spring. -Sleeting.'.will - bo dis T astrous. • ■ . Tho number, that arrived this morning aro only a few of the many North Island horses^ engaged, most of .which pro held; up in Wellington. Amongst those still IJie.ro are tho Now Zealand Cup .candidates: Bronze, Undecided, Haskayne, Peroneal, Expect, Roosevelt, Sinapis, Sea Pink, Mangaroa, Royal Arms, Lady Moiitoa. Ceylon, Imagination, Ariom, and Invader. Tho absenco of all of these horses from the big two-mile race would havo tho effect of completely spoiling the contest, and the following would then bo tho only ones .available for tho race:—Midnight Sim, Bon Rove, La Iteina, Emperador, Tannhausoi:, Thrax, Quarantine, and Clierubini. _ North Island horses aro well engaged m all other events at tho meeting, and the (success or otherwise of the future will largely depend on tho North Islanders. The Stewards' Handicap contains the names of a largo mimbor of northerners, and as tho South Island representation .is comparatively weak, a good idea con be formed or tho effect that tho striko -will have on tho metropolitan fixture. Two of Sir George Clifford's horses .Autumns and Gleiifinnan, .are also in Wellington, but- the majority of tho,Canterbury horses competing there last week returned this morning. .It is still hoped that arrangements will be made for tho shipment of the horses to Lyttelton.
