R.H. the Duke of Connaught (tho Governor-General), ana bir AVilfred Laurier (Leader of tho Opposition ii¥" tho Dominion Parliament), being present, Sir ltichard M Brido, Premier of British Columbia, said that ho deeply regretted Canada's failure to pass the Naval Defence Act. National defence ought to bo completely outside politics, and even if there were only a hint of an emergency, Canada ought to como forward with a haudsoni-o contribution. . ~ As tho Canadian Club is a non-poli-tical institution, tho speech caused a sensation. The Duke of Connaupjht said that lie would be glad to know that Canadians were of ono mind in their desires to do their whole duty towards tlio Empire's defence.
